BAK1 encodes a LRR-RLK that was originally identified as interacting with the brassinosteroid receptor BRI1 to regulate BR signaling (Li et al. 2002). Increasing evidence shows that BAK1 acts as a central co-receptor through association with multiple membrane-localized RLKs or RLPs to control plant immunity, growth, and development (Chinchilla et al. 2009). In addition to associating with ligand-binding receptors, BAK1 also interacts with all members of the BAK1-INTERACTING RECEPTOR-LIKE KINASE (BIR) family, which negatively regulates BAK1-mediated immunity (Gao et al. 2009; Blaum et al. 2014; Halter et al. 2014).
